AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM

Stranded Deep Mapper is a tool for plotting basic island locations in the survival game Stranded Deep, by Beam Team Games. It is a very simple utility designed to help navigate around and explore the world without getting lost. It is not a live minimap but rather uses the save file data.
InstructionsSave your game, then run this program. If it can't find Stranded Deep in your Steam directory, the save file name will show "Unknown" and you will need to manually set it with the Change button.
The plots you see are island locations. The names shown are just the first four digits of the internal hexadecimal object name and are not guaranteed to be unique. If you use debug mode, the node for the island in the save file is shown in brackets. In most cases, node "1" is the island you start from. To zoom, use the mouse wheel or the "-"/"+" buttons. To scroll the map, drag it with the mouse. The coordinate grid is in meters.
To update the map while you play, simply press Esc while in Stranded Deep then choose Save Game. Then in the mapper, press the Refresh button, or if "detect new save file" is checked, just sit back and wait for the changes to be detected. Note that currently there is a known memory leak and this will probably cause the mapper to crash after 5 to 10 map loads; just quit and restart the program if that happens.
To use the optional Island Names feature, save the names.txt file provided on this page to the same directory where you are executing the mapper from. The program will use the island's internal hexadecimal name to select an island name from this file (which is sourced from a modified list of geographical names for English speaking countries). As long as the contents of the names.txt file are not changed and Stranded Deep doesn't unexpectedly reassign a name to an island, your island names will remain permanent. If you'd like to get creative and replace the contents with your own name sets, feel free to do so, just make sure it is structured the same as in the provided names.txt file (one name per line). There can be a maximum of 65535 names. Note there is no method for assigning specific names to specific islands; for now, the island name that is assigned is the one you get.DownloadStranded Deep Mapper - V0.3c (2015-02-11, Windows, ~500 KB)

» names.txt (optional file to enable island names, right click and Save, and place in same directory as the program)
This is a single-file executable. Run it directly from the browser or save it to your desktop and run it.
Important notes* North as determined by your compass and sunset/sunrise will not necessarily coincide with north on the displayed map. The world could be rotated 45 degrees or more. I am still working on figuring out the cause of this. The best thing to do is view the map, sail north (or what you think is north) and reload the map to see what direction you appear to be moving. From what I can tell, the map data itself is still functional, you may just need to adapt to a different orientation of north.
* There may be a memory leak as I had the program terminate once during detected save updates. Just restart if this happens.
* Optional sea biome abbreviations are: sand plains (S LA), shallow sand plains (SHS ), barren (BARR), deep (DEEP), and bottomless (BTML).
* Item locations may be added later once I figure out how to work in more detail with the JSON code library.
* This is an experimental program for now and I am working on it as time permits.

Version history* V0.3b. Added 100-meter coordinate grid ticks. Added a search box where item locations can be searched by partial name (internal item names may differ slightly, i.e. carburetor is called "engine fuel pump", so just search for "engine" to get results. Foundations (houses) are marked with a black square. Code has been added to check if Stranded Deep has finished with the save file before attempting to load. Island names are now automatically enabled if the names.txt file is present (button has been removed). Removed erroneous array resizing which contributed to memory leak. A memory leak still exists (which causes the program to run progressively slower) but I cannot find the cause; it appears to be a problem in the JSON library.
* V0.3c. Fixes a crash when the save file isn't in the default Steam game location. Added dropdown list of all available objects in the save file. Added counts for islands, objects, shipwrecks, and sharks.
